RESEARCH GUIDANCE

One great way to explore your scientific interests and gain valuable research experience as a high school student is by conducting an independent research project..

1. Complete a Review Article

A review article involves thoroughly researching and synthesizing existing literature on a particular topic of your choice within your field of interest (e.g. biology, chemistry, physics, etc.). This allows you to gain deep expertise on the subject matter.

How to Write a Review Article:

  • Choose a specific, narrow topic to focus on

  • Find and read through numerous published studies/papers related to the topic

  • Critically analyze and summarize the key findings from the literature

  • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, or areas needing further research

  • Write an overview paper discussing the current state of knowledge and future directions

2. Publish in Student Research Journals

After completing your review article, explore publishing opportunities for high school researchers. Some excellent peer-reviewed journals include:

  • The Journal of Emerging Investigators (JEI)

  • The Journal of Student Research

  • Celebration of Student Writing

These journals are dedicated to providing a platform for outstanding student research and writing. Having a published paper looks incredibly impressive on college applications.

When submitting, be sure to follow all formatting and submission guidelines provided by the journal you choose. It's advisable to have a teacher or other adult mentor review your paper before submission. You can obtain a mentor, or even a professor or professional to help publish your paper by cold emailing one in your field of research and politely asking them if they can help publish your paper.

3. Seek Out Research Opportunities

To take your research even further, try to get involved in hands-on lab work or collaborate with professors/professional researchers on projects.

Cold Emailing Professors

One way to potentially find such opportunities is by cold emailing professors at universities or research institutions in your area of interest. Here is a guide on how to write an effective cold email:

Subject Line: Concise and specific (e.g. High School Student Seeking Research Opportunity in [Field])

Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself (name, grade, school, relevant background).

Express Interest: Explain what drew your interest to this particular professor's research. Mention a paper you read, a project that intrigued you, etc.

Highlight Qualifications: Note relevant skills, experience, coursework, awards, etc. that demonstrate your passion and ability to contribute.

Example:

Dear Dr. [Name],
My name is [Your Name], and I am a current junior at [High School] with a strong interest in the field of biomedical engineering. I was fascinated by your recent paper in [Journal Name] on the development of 3D-printed microfluidic devices for studying cancer metastasis. The intersection of engineering and medicine is extremely compelling to me.
In addition to taking AP-level courses in biology, chemistry, and physics, I have completed an independent review paper titled "[Title]" that was recently published in The Journal of Emerging Investigators. I also have experience with [list relevant technical/lab skills, programming languages, etc.]. Please find my resume, transcript, and publication attached.
I would be tremendously grateful for the opportunity to meet with you and discuss potential ways I could contribute to your research as a high school assistant. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
